Internet of food: Arduino-based, urban aquaponics in Oakland
The land in West Oakland where Eric Maundu is trying to farm is covered with freeways, roads, light rail and parking lots so there's not much arable land and the soil is contaminated. So Maundu doesn't use soil. Instead he's growing plants using fish and circulating water.
It's called aquaponics- a gardening system that combines hydroponics (water-based planting) and aquaculture (fish farming). It's been hailed as the future of farming: it uses less water (up to 90% less than traditional gardening), doesn't attract soil-based bugs and produces two types of produce (both plants and fish).
Aquaponics has become popular in recent years among urban gardeners and DIY tinkerers, but Maundu- who is trained in industrial robotics- has taken the agricultural craft one step further and made his gardens smart. Using sensors (to detect water level, pH and temperature), microprocessors (mostly the open-source Arduino microcontroller), relay cards, clouds and social media networks (Twitter and Facebook), Maundu has programmed his gardens to tweet when there's a problem (e.g. not enough water) or when there's news (e.g. an over-abundance of food to share).
Maundu himself ran from agriculture in his native Kenya- where he saw it as a struggle for land, water and resources. This changed when he realized he could farm without soil and with little water via aquaponics and that he could apply his robotics background to farming. Today he runs Kijani Grows ("Kijani" is Swahili for green), a small startup that designs and sells custom aquaponics systems for growing food and attempts to explore new frontiers of computer-controlled gardening. Maundu believes that by putting gardens online, especially in places like West Oakland (where his solar-powered gardens are totally off the grid), it's the only way to make sure that farming remains viable to the next generation of urban youth.

Kesal ubat traditional RM40,000 gagal selamatkan isteri

Aweks Comel Kencing Dalam Lift
A young woman is the talk of the town after she was caught on CCTV peeing inside an elevator.
The recording shows the woman, believed to be in her 20s, answering the call of nature at 6.07am on Oct 10.
Sri Saujana flat joint management committee secretary Yeoh Kean Huat said the woman, believed to be a Chinese national, had not been seen since the incident.
The 16-second footage shows the woman turning her head to look at the camera before removing her denim shorts to urinate. She then presses several buttons on the lift. Yeoh believes the woman lives on the 13th floor.
Following a meeting with the joint management committee, Yeoh said they decided to put up printouts of the CCTV footage, with the woman's eyes blacked out, on the notice board to serve as a warning to others.
“We decided not to lodge a police report as this was the first case caught on CCTV since we installed it two years ago,” he said at the flat in Macallum Street yesterday.
A resident, who wished to be known as Vicky, said a local resident would never do such a thing.
“I think she must have been drunk to simply pee in the lift. She could have been a China doll' renting a room here.
“They work at night and come back in the morning. That's why I've never seen her before,” said Vicky, who also stays on the 13th floor.

Bosnian man walks 5,700km to Makkah to perform Hajj
SARAJEVO: A Bosnian Muslim pilgrim who left last December on pilgrimage to Makkah by foot told AFP on Monday that he has arrived after passing through seven countries including war-torn Syria.
“I arrived Saturday in Makkah. I am not tired, these are the best days of my life,” Senad Hadzic, 47, said when reached by phone on a Saudi mobile number.
He said he had covered some 5,700 kilometres (3,540 miles) in 314 days of walking through Bosnia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Turkey, Syria and Jordan to the Muslim holy city in south-western Saudi Arabia, with a backpack weighing 20 kilos (44 pounds).
He charted his progress on his Facebook page, where he posted a picture apparently of an entry/exit card for foreigners issued by the Syrian interior ministry.
“I passed through Syria in April. I walked some 500 kilometres in 11 days. I went through Aleppo and Damascus and passed dozens of check-points held by pro-government and rebel forces alike, but I was never detained,” Hadzic said.
“At a check-point held by (President Bashar) al-Assad’s forces the soldier ordered me to empty my backpack … When I showed them my Quran and explained I was making the pilgrimage on foot, they let me go,” he told AFP.
“I walked in the name of Allah, for Islam, for Bosnia-Hercegovina, for my parents and my sister,” he added.
On his Facebook page he said God had shown him the way in dreams, including to go through Syria instead of Iraq.
During the pilgrimage, Hadzic faced temperatures ranging from minus 35 Celsius in Bulgaria to plus 44 Celsius in Jordan.

He said he had to wait in Istanbul for several weeks to get permission to cross the Bosphorus Bridge on foot and two months at the border between Jordan and Saudi Arabia to obtain an entry visa.
The hajj is one of the five pillars of Islam and must be undertaken at least once in a lifetime by all Muslims who are able to.

Apple loses tablet copyright appeal against Samsung
(Reuters) - Apple has lost its appeal against a ruling that cleared rival Samsung of copying its registered designs for tablet computers, in a decision which could end the two firms' legal dispute on the subject across Europe.
The world's two leading smartphone makers are fighting over patents, both for smartphones and for tablets like Apple's iPad, in courts around the world.
Britain's Court of Appeal on Thursday upheld the country's High Court judgment that, despite some similarities, Samsung's Galaxy tablet did not infringe Apple's designs, in part because its products were "not as cool".
The decision is valid throughout Europe and should prohibit further legal disputes between the two companies over the design of tablets in the region.
South Korea's Samsung welcomed the decision saying in a statement: "We continue to believe that Apple was not the first to design a tablet with a rectangular shape and rounded corners".
Apple declined to comment on the decision.
The U.S. company has been instructed to run advertisements saying Samsung did not copy its registered tablet designs, both on its website and in selected newspapers.
Apple can appeal to the Supreme Court.
Source
"I expect this will be the end of the line. An appeal to the Supreme Court is in principle possible but there has been no indication so far that Apple plan such an appeal", Darren Smyth partner at EIP, a specialist intellectual property law firm, told Reuters.
"For the design of tablets in Europe this should be the final word."

Google allows first ever look at the eight vast data centres that power the online world!
Google has given a rare glimpse inside the vast data centres around the globe that power its services.
They reveal an intricate maze of computers that process Internet search requests, show YouTube video clips and distribute email for millions of people.
With hundreds of thousands of servers, colourful cables and even bicycles so engineers can get around quickly, they range from a converted paper mill in Finland to custom made server farms in Iowa.
'Very few people have stepped inside Google’s data centers, and for good reason: our first priority is the privacy and security of your data, and we go to great lengths to protect it, keeping our sites under close guard,' the firm said.
'While we’ve shared many of our designs and best practices, and we’ve been publishing our efficiency data since 2008, only a small set of employees have access to the server floor itself. 'Today, for the first time, you can see inside our data centers and pay them a virtual visit.
'On Where the Internet lives, our new site featuring beautiful photographs by Connie Zhou, you’ll get a never-before-seen look at the technology, the people and the places that keep Google running.'
Hati-Hati Arak Kangkang Dari Geng Samun Kangkang

Simon Cowell looking to sell his Brabus Smart convertible
In the world of celebrity cars, there's been a recent race to see who can acquire the most gargantuan ride, from Arnold Schwarzenegger's military-grade Unimog to the tricked-out full-size vans supposedly replacing the full-size SUV in many famous driveways. Which makes it somewhat refreshing to see a star -- in this case, "X-Factor" host Simon Cowell -- embrace something small, namely a souped-up version of the mini Smart convertible.
Or at least, embrace it for a bit, as Cowell's looking to sell his rare ride now. Tuned by Brabus, the German firm known for decking Mercedes models in fast and furious fashion, the Brabus Ultimate 120 Smart isn't available in America, even though sales of the Smart have doubled this year. Starting with the 70-hp three-cylinder engine in the Smart ForTwo cabriolet, Brabus somehow turns up the wick to 118 hp, then throws in a new suspension, tires, brakes and other bits to make the Smart handle less like a pair of children's rollerskates.
After all that attention, Brabus says the Ultimate Smart will hit 62 mph in 8.9 seconds, about as fast as a stock Honda Civic, but with the thrill of being the smallest vehicle on any given road. Cowell's Smart isn't just any Brabus, but the first of a 120-vehicle limited edition, with all of its black-on-black leather and alcantara interior parts "designed personally by Simon." The price on the board at this weekend's Smart festival in Britain translates to roughly $56,000. Hey, no one said looking like a celebrity would be cheap, even in a Smart.

Rebat RM200: Rais mahu had umur dinaik hingga 40
